On the treshold of the world championship football, 'Kampioenenjaar' takes us back to the 2010-2011 football season in Belgium. That year, KRC Genk becomes national champion, with the help of two teenagers that will later grace the biggest football teams of the world with their presence: Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois.
The year marks the start of a golden generation in Belgian football, with players like Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Vanden Borre, Axel Witsel, and many others. Kampioenenjaar (translation: year of the champions) brings the story of those who made it big time, and those who never really outgrew their local football shoes. What went on behind the scenes at KRC Genk and during one of the most nerve racking finales in Belgian football to date? With a mix of exclusive archive footage, unique interviews with on-and-off the field crew, this docuseries tries to answer it all.
This production came into being with the support of Flanders Tax Shelter.
