'Kampioenenjaar' kicks off on Canvas & VRT Max

Borgerhoff & Lamberigts TV presents: the perfect prelude to the FIFA World Cup. In 2010-2011, the national Belgian football season had one of its most legendary runs ever, culminating in a more than nerve-racking and thrilling finale for KRC Genk at the end of the tournament.

Earlier that year, two novices stepped on Genk's green grass, without whom we could not even imagine the current international football scene: Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois. What was it that made their names to be shouted throughout stadiums around the world, only a few years later? What made the cosy town of Genk the perfect soil for some of the best football players of the 21st century? And why did not all their teammates shoot it straight to the top?

The 2010-2011 season in Genk, marked the beginning of a golden generation in Belgian football, soon sending representatives across the globe. Among the likes are: Romelu Lukaku, Axel Witsel, Steven Defour, Yannick Carrasco and Christian Benteke. All of them are featured in this impassioned documentary, accompanied by family, supporters and on- or off-the field crew members.

'Kampioenenjaar' (translation: year of the champions) tries to understand what it takes to become a champion, and why one player ends up at the top of the football pyramid, while another never really outgrows his local football shoes. Adorned with exclusive archive material and unique testimonials, this documentary is the ideal preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Available on CANVAS AND/OR VRT MAX from 14/10 onwards.
