'Het Scheldepeloton' wins award for best TV-programme of the year

Documentary “Het Scheldepeloton” wins “De HA van Humo” for best TV-programme of the year. Ever since 1980, the editors of national magazine Humo have selected the most remarkable and well-made programmes of Belgian television. With this year's unanimous conclusion, the jury reveals “Het Scheldepeloton” as the most gripping programme on television in 2021; showing quality well beyond current standards. Even though the ceremony was held online due to the current covid restrictions, programme makers Lieven Van Gils, Hendrik Luyten, Wouter Heymans and team were able to accept the award on stage.

Het Scheldepeleton is a six-part human interest series about five young cyclists from Ghent. All of them are fighting for the same dream: becoming professional cyclists. One by one they make their dream come true, but the road to fame is paved with many obstacles. This, including the tragic death of Dimitri De Fauw en Wouter Weylandt, who’s dreams are carried on through the spirits and friendships they made along the way. The report of the jury praises the programme’s integrity and sober approach that led it to this well deserved win.

In the jury's words:

"The HA van Humo goes to a series that week after week encaptured and moved viewers. Through the power of the story, the purity of the testimonials and the finesse with which they were portrayed. A documentary about tragic crashes, haunting dark thoughts and pure tragedy. While never forgetting the warm friendship, that unique boyish enthousiasm and the beauty of cycling."

Read the original Dutch eulogy here:

"De HA van Humo gaat naar een serie die je week na week meer in haar ban kreeg en naar de keel greep. Door de kracht van het verhaal, de puurheid van de getuigenissen en de fijngevoeligheid waarmee ze in beeld werden gebracht. Een documentaire over tragische valpartijen, donkere gedachten en pure tragiek. Maar ook over vriendschap, tomeloze jongensdromen en de schoonheid van het wielrennen."
